Amir Diop
Amir Diop bourgeoned on the scene of a desolate, boarded-up, New York City on Pause in the temperature-rising summer of 2020. His murals on plywood covering the windows of retailers high end, in SoHo, doused colorful acrylic spray-painted images and poignant phrases with the realities of disparity amongst humankind in America. Other artists began to join the expression, contemplate solutions and heal through art during this historic time period. A unity of significance developed between a collective of artists who would become, SoHo Renaissance Factory or familiarly known as SRF which Amir Diop is cofounder.
The work of SRF was recognized by Sotheby’s and selected for exhibition at the National Arts Club in New York City in late Fall of 2020. The transition of their bolted plywood works affixed to storefront windows for public display into framed submissions as part of the curated exhibit, Voices of the Soho Renaissance was monumental as it would change the way Amir formulated and translated his future works. Although the group would continue to participate in many other projects, each has actively pursued independent avenues.
Amir and Brendan McNally, also a SRF cofounder, remained constant throughout and together visualized the neo-savage art style. The pioneering technique uses layers, patterns, and identifying trademarks to give fullness to the painting. Amir’s current works embody the neo-savage style as a foundation for his visual storytelling. His piece, The Crown Bearer, one of the first to debut the style was displayed on kiosk in the DOT Staten Island commuter transit hubs in 2021. Later that year Amir would partner with Gobbi Fine Arts for a solo exhibition, En Route to Positivity at Platinum Sounds Recording Studios owned and operated by Grammy Award-winning producer, Jerry “Wonda” Duplessis to further illuminate his style.
Diop’s pieces are typically recognized by the youthfulness of the paint strokes, vibrant colors and dyslexic text. Fun may be what comes to mind. The wholehearted intention is to relate to one’s younger self while also communicating with the next generation. While painting on plywood, Amir was simultaneously creating cartoon characters. Wobbleton, illustrated by Diop, graced street lamp banners on Broadway, south of Houston Street in Manhattan for nearly one year. The plan to write and illustrate an entire graphic novel became his trajectory. With the help of other artists, the Triptoverse Comic Book featuring Diop’s Wobbleton character was born.
Using Wobbleton as a prototype, another SRF member, Keiji Drysdale introduced Amir to the possibilities of augmented reality animation. Amir was immediately entranced with the concept and commissioned Keiji to AR animate the characters, Wobbleton and Cubix for the Triptoverse Trading Cards.
Formulated from Amir Diop’s neo-savage painting style, visual storytelling, vivid childhood memories, and AR components, Lionel the Lying Lion©, rooted in moral lessons, has emerged as Diop’s first children’s book, released in July 2023. Amir Diop lives in the New York metropolitan area and operates out of his Diop Studios LLC.
